Volgarr the Viking (21-08-2015) (DC Game)

Our friends from The Dreamcast Junkyard came up with wonderful news: With Marc Hall‘s hard work and the permission from Crazy Viking Studios the game Volgarr the Viking was remade for Sega’s Dreamcast.

Playing as Volgarr the Viking, use your sword and spear to slaughter your foes in bloody combat. Battle Gigantic bosses in every world and find secrets that lead to unknown paths. Holding onto Volgarr’s gear is key; his very life depends on it!

The Dreamcast version is Freeware but if you appreciate the game for Dreamcast you might want to buy the commercial version from Steam? The game is available to buy for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (requires SteamOS).

Raining Squares (02-04-2015) (DC VMU Techdemo)

Raining Squares by Sebastian Mihai is a Sega Dreamcast VMU homebrew tech demo. The VMU is also sometimes called VMS. The background is animated, the player controls a pixel, moving it left right, and there are falling squares which appear at random X positions, and have random sizes. There is a delay every time the player’s pixel collides with a falling square.

Overbearing Burgers (01-03-2015) (DC Game)

Overbearing Burgers by Sebastien Mihai is a Sega Dreamcast homebrew game featuring a hungry brown bear. The bear must jump at the right time to not only not hit the rocks on the ground, but also to not miss any of the hamburgers. Overbearing Burgers is very easy to play; the only button used is A, which will make the bear jump.

Gianas Return v1.10.1 (DC Game Port)

Giana’s Return aims to be a worthy UNOFFICIAL sequel of “The Great Giana Sisters” and has been recently updated for Dreamcast to match to it’s latest v1.10 version. Ported to Dreamcast by Indiket.

Evil Swampy and his followers have stolen the magic ruby, which made it once possible for Giana and Maria to return from their dream. Many creatures are after this ruby, but does it really has power, or was it just a coincidence? As this is not bad enough, Swampy fell in love at first sight with Giana’s sister Maria and shamelessly kidnapped her. She simply has been at the wrong place at the wrong time. You will now have to take on the role of Giana and get back the magic ruby. And most important of all, save your beloved sister Maria and get home save!

Release notes:

Unfortunately we had a bug in Giana’s Return v1.10 for Dreamcast, which crashed the game after level 8. After some investigation Indiket was able to track the bug down. The version of mikmod used was a bit old and had to be updated to v3.3.7. The game works as expected again. Sorry Dreamcast users! Head over to the download section for the update and enjoy a crash free version.

ScummVM v1.6.0 (misc)

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft’s Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution’s Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep’s Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision’s Gobliiins; Westwood Studios’ The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts’ SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.

Release notes: 1.6.0

New Games:
– Added support for 3 Skulls of the Toltecs.
– Added support for Eye of the Beholder.
– Added support for Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon.
– Added support for Hopkins FBI.
– Added support for Tony Tough and the Night of Roasted Moths.
– Added support for The Journeyman Project: Pegasus Prime.
– Added support for the Macintosh version of Discworld 1.

General:
– Added a new save/load chooser based on a grid of thumbnails. This is only supported for resolutions bigger than 640×400. The old chooser is still available and used for games without thumbnail support. It is possible to select the old one as default too.
– Rewrote VideoDecoder subsystem.
– Added Galician translation.
– Added Finnish translation.
– Added Belarusian translation.
– Using the mouse wheel on a slider widget now changes the value by the smallest possible amount. This is more predictable than the old behaviour, which was to change the value by “one pixel” which would sometimes not change it at all.
– Updated MT-32 emulation code to latest munt project snapshot.
– Added FluidSynth settings dialog, mainly for reverb and chorus settings.
– Fixed crash on certain Smacker movies.

Cine:
– Improved audio support for Amiga and AtariST versions of Future Wars. Now music fades out slowly instead of stopping immediately. Sound effects are now properly panned, when requested by the game.

CGE:
– Soltys contains a puzzle requiring the ALT key to be pressed while clicking on an object. This puzzle has been disabled on devices not using this key.

Drascula:
– Resolved multiple UI issues with the original save/load screen.
– Added advanced savegame functionality, including savegame timestamps and thumbnails and the ability to load and delete savegames from the launcher. It’s now possible to use the ScummvM save/load dialogs.
– The F7 key (previously unmapped) now always shows the ScummVM load screen. The F10 key displays either the original save/load screen, or the ScummVM save screen, if the user has selected to use the ScummVM save/load dialogs.

Dreamweb:
– Now that the game is freeware, there is a small extra help text showing the available commands in the in-game terminals when the player uses the ‘help’ command. Previously, players needed to consult the manual for the available commands. Since this reference to the manual is a form of copy protection, this extra line can be toggled by the ScummVM copy protection command line option.

Groovie:
– Simplified the movie speed options, and added a custom option for The 7th Guest. Movie options are now “normal” and “fast”, with the latter changing the movie speed in T7G to match the faster movie speed of the iOS version. The game entry might need to be readded in the launcher for the new setting to appear.

SAGA:
– Added music support for the Macintosh version of I Have No Mouth and, I Must Scream.

SCUMM:
– Implemented Monkey Island 2 Macintosh’s audio driver. Now we properly support its sample based audio output. The same output is also used for the m68k Macintosh version of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
– Improved music support for the Macintosh version of Monkey Island 1. It now uses the original instruments, rather than approximating them with General MIDI instruments, and should sound a lot closer to the original.
– Added sound and music support for the Macintosh version of Loom.
– Handle double-clicking in the Macintosh version of Loom.
– Major bugfixes in INSANE (the Full Throttle bike fights).

TOUCHE:
– Added support for Enhanced Music by James Woodcock (http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk/category/scummvm-music-enhancement-project/).

Sqrxz 3 v1.05 (Game)

Sqrzx 3 by Retroguru is a pretty insane Jump’n Run Game with puzzle elements. Make sure your mind works faster than a thunder and your fingers should be even faster than that.

The Dreamcast and Symbian OS S60 & UIQ3 version are now in sync with the latest sources.

Unsung (08-01-2013) (DC Game Port)

Unsung, a World War I adventure in Wolfenstein 3D, lets you slog through the trenches in true pixelated FPS fashion.

Notes from Nembo:

Dead. That one word perfectly describes the current status of the Dreamcast port of Unsung. Now that the bad news has been dealt with, here is some good news. The incomplete and probably never to be completed port is now released and up for download. I had wanted to finish this awhile back but little work has been put into it the last eight months, and I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon. As it currently stands the cutscenes still don’t function and the frame rate is rather low. This port really can’t be recommended but here it is.
