PDRoms Coding Competition v4.01 (PCE misc)

It’s reality again, here comes PDROMS CODING COMPETITION v4.01 – Retro Coding Fun for Console and Handhelds!

Coding on “closed” handhelds or consoles must not be a privilege; dozens of free development kits proof the opposite. The steadily growing “homebrew scene” produces unlicensed software for devices not meant to be open for everyone.

PDRoms has always been in the homebrew scene to support the creation of new homebrew software, support programmers and artists. To show our love to the homebrew scene once again, here comes the ninth PDRoms Coding Competition.

Here is the brief data:

Topic: Create a logic/puzzle game

WLA DX v9.4a (08-04-2008) (PCE misc)

WLA DX has stagnated a lot recently but there has been progress since the last time (November 2006). WLA DX is a Macro Assembler Package for GB-Z80/Z80/6502/65C02/6510/65816/HUC6280/SPC-700 and was written by Ville Helin.

Changes:

– data filtering macros (looks useful for non-standard string encoding)
– Mersenne Twister random numbers (not that you’d use them much at compile-time)
– Label and line number bugfixes

Mysterious Song (Demo) (PCE Game)

Here are some news from Eponasoft

Quote from our webboard:

This was released back in late September by one of the other groups I code for, Frozen Utopia. It’s a quick demo of the game and what to expect from the final. Some of the things have changed since this demo release (most notably the cutscene graphics) but the gameplay hasn’t changed much at all since then, just some minor tweaks. Anyways, here’s the file:

http://www.frozenutopia.com/msrdemo.rar

INSTRUCTIONS:
-Download and unrar.
-Run “unpack.bat” to decompress the audio files.
-Burn, mount to a virtual drive, or run the cuesheet directly in Mednafen.
-Enjoy πŸ™‚

It will run in Magic Engine (you need a virtual drive to do this, or a burned CDR of the game) but there will be some graphics glitches due to unemulated features. The best way to play it is with Mednafen or a real machine. It requires a System 3 card and, like all other PCE CDROMs, is region-free so it will run equally well on a PC Engine Duo, TurbGrafx-16+CDROM+System 3 card, etc.

512-Colour Test Demo

This is just a simple demo that displays all of the 512 available colours of the PC-Engine on a single screen!

Some Hidden PC Engine Pics

This is just a small slideshow that displays some pictures that were hidden away in some PCE CD games. Compiled by Chris Covell.

Screen Dimension Test

Don’t be scared by all the numbers, but this is a small tool for a real PC-Engine to adjust various screen settings to see what the maximum screen area that can be displayed on your PCE and TV is.

Axelay SuperGrafx Demo

This is (the first?) graphics demo for the NEC SuperGrafx system. This demo should be run only in a good emulator that supports the SGX hardware. YAME is one example.

CUE/ISO file for burning to a CD is included with the download file!

Split-Resolution Demo

This demo splits up the screen into 3 regions, and shows different resolutions in each region! It looks great on a real PC-Engine system, even though many emulators fail to run it correctly. “Mednafen” runs it quite well.
