The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) — originally launched in Japan as the Family Computer (Famicom) in 1983 — is an 8-bit home console. Powered by a 1.79 MHz Ricoh 2A03 CPU (1.66 MHz PAL) with 2 KB main RAM and 2 KB VRAM, it uses a custom Ricoh PPU to output a 256 x 240 pixel display with 25 simultaneous colors from a 54-color palette, alongside a 5-channel audio synthesizer. Software was distributed on ROM cartridges, often utilizing custom expansion chips (mappers) to expand memory and graphical capabilities.
