Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) is a lightweight Java environment introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1999 for resource-constrained devices like mobile phones and PDAs. Built on the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) and Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC), it enabled cross-platform mobile software execution through lightweight apps called MIDlets, defining the pre-smartphone mobile gaming era of the 2000s.
