The Sega CD (released as the Mega-CD outside North America) is a CD-ROM accessory for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, released by Sega in 1991 in Japan and 1992 worldwide. Powered by a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 12.5 MHz, 512 KB of main RAM, 256 KB of VRAM, and 8 KB of internal save RAM, it features a custom graphics chip that adds hardware sprite scaling and rotation capabilities. It uses CD-ROMs to dramatically expand storage capacity, enabling full-motion video (FMV), Red Book CD audio streams, and additional Ricoh PCM sound channels.
