Video: NES Programming #21 – I’m the map, I’m the map… (NES misc)

Michael Chiaramonte shows us once again how to do some NES Programming.

NES Programming #21 - I'm the map, I'm the map...
Watch this video on YouTube.

After being off for a week we did some small optimizations, messed with how levels are loaded, and then played around with sprite 0 hit detection. It was a pretty fun stream because I was mostly messing around with the NES code and not the asset tool. I need to get map building working properly in the NES asset tool so we can get more serious about building backgrounds. I also need to figure out the sprite 0 hit detection better (or, you know, just figure it out)

Alfonzo’s Arctic Adventure v2018.04.19 (WIP) (NES Game)

The author of Alfonzo’s Arctic Adventure brought another update to our attention.

Release notes:

New level clear animation! I’m pretty proud of how nicely that spiral effect turned out. Had to use some creative math to get it to work with the scrolling, but definitely worth it. #nesdev #nes #indiedev #gamedev

Star Ark v2018.03.19 (WIP) (Genesis Game)

Star Ark is a science fiction game being developed for the Sega Genesis. The game is set on an interstellar colony ship. The player is a member of the crew who must put down a mutiny and set the ship back on course. The 8 Bit Daddy Daughter Team asks for design feedback, so give them a hand!

Twitter friends. I am having a wee creative crisis at the moment. In many ways I like the look that our game is taking on but I am not sure about the palettes. Your feedback in the poll would be much appreciated; honesty is also appreciated so don’t hold back.

This week:

A lot of fun was had at the Midwest Gaming Classic convention this week, but Billy Mitchell is facing some serious heat. The Rampage movie is out and we’ve got reviews of the film and of a couple versions of the game. We are pleasantly surprised to find out about the HD remake of a classic Dreamcast title and we remember children’s educational cassette tapes in this episode of the Retro League.
