Simple Media System v2.9 (PS2 Application)

Eugene Plotnikov has updated his SMS (Simple Media System) multimedia playing application for the Sony PS2. Using this program you can view multimedia files including DIVX, AVI, XVID, MPEG, MP3, etc … on your Sony Playstation 2 video gaming console.

Changes:

– fixed incorect subtitle alignment when subtitle font horizontal size is not equal to the default value of 32;
– slightly changed file autodetection algorithm;
– added baseline JPEG decoder (written from scratch) and rather primitive JPEG viewer. Sequence of images can also be viewed using the same button combinations as for audio/video playlists (“circle” for folder and “R1-circle” for the current folder). While in viewer following gamepad and remote control buttons can be used:
– left: previous slide;
– right/cross: next slide;
– triangle: exit;
– rectangle: zoom-in/zoom-out (only for images with esolution lower than screen one);
Note: decoder supports only baseline JPEGs at the moment. Progressive, loseless and other “exotic” files are not currently supported. Maximum image resolution that has been tested is 6912×4608 though higher resolution images should also be processed without problems;

PS2 Hacking System in Development (PS2 misc)

LBGSHI posted news about a PS2 Hacking System which is in development. Check out the link below for his full statement.

Quote:

For some time now (several years, off and on), GSHI.org administrative staff and several select members of the scene have been working, in secret, on something tentatively called Project Artemis: a hacking system for the Playstation 2. The primary goal of this project is to allow users to create, or hack, their own cheat and game enhancement codes, using RAM-dumping, dump comparison, constant memory writes for testing, breakpoints, and as many other tools as feasible.

The project is far from complete. There have been quite a few stumbling blocks, and some impressive progress has been made. Through several primary coders (Sang123, Hit n’ Run Games, misfire, Shyam Narain, Xerxes Technologies, cYs Driver), it has been determined that…

libpng v1.2.33 (PS2 misc)

ragnarok2040 has updated the libpng library port to PS2.

Release notes:

I’ve updated the libpng port to 1.2.33. I uploaded a tarball of the source and a patch to update the current port to 1.2.33 to http://homebrew.thewaffleiron.net/ragnarok2040. The tests in pngtest.c passed and gsKit’s png-texture example worked fine. You should make sure previous header and library versions of libpng aren’t installed otherwise it might get linked in when building pngtest.c.

zlib v1.2.3 (PS2 misc)

ragnarok2040 has updated the zlib library port to PS2.

Release notes:

I updated the zlib port to version 1.2.3. It’s at http://homebrew.thewaffleiron.net/ragnarok2040. I made a patch as well so updating the svn repository should be easier. Not much work was really needed except for reorganizing the directory structure of the files and copying over the Makefiles from the old port.

Sony On Developing for an Open PS2 Platform (PS2 misc)

GameDaily published an article about Sony public-semi opening the Playstation 2 for third party developers. Unfortunatly you will still require to buy the official devkit from them, which is a bit pricy for the regular user.

Here is a partitial quote of the article:

Kiev, Ukraine – PlayStation development took center stage at Casual Connect when Sony Europe’s developer relations manager George Bain addressed an audience of Eastern European developers.

The PlayStation 2 has sold 131.3 million units to date, he said. The software sales for that platform have been over 1.4 billion.

The PlayStation Portable has sold 41.3 million units. Software sales have been 169 million.

And as of June 30th, the PlayStation 3 has sold 14.4 million units, with software sales of 94 million.

The most important information Bain had for his audience was news that, in Europe, the PlayStation 2 “is effectively an open platform,” adding, “You no longer have to submit a game for content approval.” He used examples from Russia and Indian developers, saying they can “create low-development cost titles and release them in their market.”…
