Scrambled Net v2.8 (Android Game)

This is a port of the KDE game “knetwalk”, by Andi Peredri, Thomas Nagy, and Reinhold Kainhofer. Ported to Android by Ian Cameron Smith (headstay); released under GPL. Includes MTRandom by David Beaumont, released under LGPL.

The player is given a network diagram with the parts of the network randomly rotated; he/she must rotate them to connect all the terminals to the server.

Scrambled Net detects the screen size of the device it’s running in, and configures the board appropriately. This makes the game a bit easier on smaller phones — we don’t want to make the cells too small, because it’s difficult to tap on a tiny cell on a phone’s touchscreen. Portrait and landscape phones are handled automatically.

Tile rotation is smoothly animated; highlighted tiles show the user’s progress.

The game is designed to be usable with 12-key keypad or QWERTY keypad, or by tapping the screen.

The game has 5 difficulty levels; the first 3 use different board sizes; then wrap-around is introduced for “Master” level; then “Insane” level adds invisible cells. In case you’re wondering, yes, I can solve “Insane” puzzles, usually in 10-12 minutes on a large (HVGA) phone.

ExchangeIt v0.6.0 (Android Application)

Email client for android that supports Exchange OWA (Outlook Web Access) through WebDav. It uses HttpClient to send WebDav requests to read your inbox, displays the list of messages, and uses some of the standard android Email Client classes to display the message.

K9 v0.31 (Android misc)

Sega Saturn Coding Contest Winter 2008-2009 (Sega Saturn misc)

News from RockinB – one of the last heros of the Sega Saturn homebrew scene.

It is time again for another episode of the annual SEGA Saturn Coding Contest. A few small changes compared to previous contests mean significant improvements for all contestants:

Your effort is directly rewarded with a prize. No more “I don’t have a chance to compete with contestant x”, because your prize does not depend on your rank. Instead the amount depends solely on your effort.

The goal to port games over to saturn lowers the amount of annoying debugging work, so you get more result out with less work and you can concentrate on the funny things of homebrew coding.

Objective:
As Porting Party suggests, the objective is to take an existing game of your choice and port it over to SEGA Saturn! This implies that the source code of that game is available and written in C or C++. It’s totally up to you which game you choose! Choose your game carefully, try playing it yourself before starting to port it. You’ll be best off picking up a game that’s finished, very enjoyable to play and that doesn’t exceed the hardware capabilities of the SEGA Saturn console.

Time:
The contest is running during winter 2008/2009.

Meteorologically, this is the time from december 21st 2008 to march 20th 2009. So march 20th 2009 is the deadline for submitting your entries. To submit your entry: upload the Zip-compressed ISO CD image to a file hosting service like megaupload.com and submit the link via email to C4@rockin-b.de.

Prizes:
All entries are rewarded, no matter which rank. The better your entry is, the more money you win. The more entries you submit, the more money you win.

Money: Every entry wins as much money, as it got points from the judges. So having achieved the maximum results in: 90 point = 90 euro. Even more if you collected extra points by using special saturn hardware features. Multiple entries means multiple times money! Money is transfered via paypal, contestants in the EU can alternatively use bank transfer.

USB Data Link v2: This device connects your Saturn with your PC and transfers game saves, bios and uploads homebrew games for testing. Version 2 is brand new and exclusive to contestants, it transfers data much faster than version 1, you can’t get it anywhere else. All contestants who haven’t got a one last year, will get one for free. Those who won such a device last year, can have it upgraded to v2 for free!

Judging:
The entries are judged in the three categories: graphics, sound and gameplay. The judging is done by 5 to 6 judges in parallel. Every judge rates each entry in each category by giving a rating between 1 and 5 points. This means each entry can get up to 75/90 points regularly.

Additionally, extra points can be achieved by using special hardware features of the Saturn console.

Circus Calacticus (21-12-2008) (A2600 Game)

Circus Calcticus, which was known as “DUEL” for a short time, has been updated. It’s a futuristic gladiator tournament, where combatants duel each other to the death for the pleasure of the galactic empire. The game will comprise the player’s fighting career, with the difficulty and rewards ramping up with each new match. A match ends when one gladiator loses all of his shields, and is fried by his opponents laser beam. The player begins a match with three shields, while each new opponent gains more shields up to a maximum of five.

Release notes:

I’ve worked a bit on my “hurry-up” routine for the game. When a the game-timer reaches a certain point, two walls seal off the defensive zones, and the shield material becomes a wave of deadly electricity that fries you. The time between the beginning of the round and when the walls appear decreases as you progress through the game.

Jack and the Beanstalk (Build 15) (A2600 Game)

atariland2600 has posted an update of his Atari 2600 homebrew game “Jack and the Beanstalk” which is based upon a fairy tale with the same name.

Release notes:

They’re supposed to be clubs, but you can have them be whatever you want them to be.

Update:
+ Added Jack to the title screen.
+ Added three new screens to level 2.
To access the password screen, press up then down at the title screen and put in “28” and then press “fire” to get to these latest screens.
