Simple Media System v2.8 (PS2 Application)

Eugene Plotnikov has updated his SMS (Simple Media System) multimedia playing application for the Sony PS2. Using this program you can view multimedia files including DIVX, AVI, XVID, MPEG, MP3, etc … on your Sony Playstation 2 video gaming console.

Changes:

– added FLAC audio support;
– added small (32 entries FIFO) history buffer for video clips. It is saved into ‘SMS’ folder on the memory card. History is based on the absolute file name. Only clips that were ended by the user action (triangle gamepad button) are added/updated to the history buffer and the buffer is saved automatically, so there can be some pause when playback is ended by the user;
– added support for raw .ac3 audio files;
– added functionality to control vertical image position for video clips. It is available via player menu during playback and may be useful to display subtitles more nicely;
– updated USB mass storage driver (added device handling with sector sizes other than 512 bytes);
– updated network driver;

Ballion (PS2 Game)

Ballion is based on the C64`er game Crillion. The code is written using the free ps2dev toolchain. To play Ballion you need to copy it to a memory card or to ps2 hard disc. You need 7,1 MByte free space. You don’t need a modified ps2 to play it. You can use the ps2 linux or the memory card exploit for booting. Files required for booting can be downloaded at ps2dev. Game states are saved on memory card in slot 1.

Thanks to http://www.dcemu.co.uk for the news.

Simple Media System v2.7 (PS2 Application)

Eugene Plotnikov has updated his SMS (Simple Media System) multimedia playing application for the Sony PS2. Using this program you can view multimedia files including DIVX, AVI, XVID, MPEG, MP3, etc … on your Sony Playstation 2 video gaming console.

Changes:

– Fixed problem with (S)VCD .DAT files. Thanks to ‘Salacho’ for the remark;
– USB mass storage driver is rewritten from scratch (though some elements from ‘ps2dev’s’ one were used). Added support for up to 4 USB mass storage devices (FAT formatted) that are simultaneously connected to the console. USB devices with multiple logical units (like -in-1 cardreaders) should also work (tested here with SWEEX CF004 53-in-1 cardreader with CF and SD cards)). Transfer speed varies depending on filesystem fragmentation (peak rate exceeds 800KB/s sometimes (btw., maximum raw transfer rate (without filesystem overhead) I’ve got here is around 950 KB/s which is the same as on my PC (USB 1.1 slot). If this driver will cause problems then there’s still a possibility to use older driver as described in changelog from 05-FEB-2008;
– Improved .aac file autodetection algorithm. Thanks to ‘lee99’ for the sample clip;
– Added support for HE-AAC sound. Thanks to everybody who provided sample clips;

ScummVM PS2 v0.11.1 (PS2 misc)

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft’s Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution’s Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep’s Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision’s Gobliiins; Westwood Studios’ The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts’ SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.

Release notes:

ScummVM continues to leap forward in a leap year, and we are pleased to announce the next shiny bugfix release of the project.

As usual, it holds a number of improvements, it’s more stable, and it should bring you even more fun than 0.11.0.

We fixed the digital iMUSE system (better COMI experience), King’s Quest 4 bugs were squashed, and support for fanmade AGI games has been improved; Lure of the Temptress, Inherit the Earth and I Have no Mouth all work better since we fixed several crashes, lock-ups and all such buzzwords.

As a special bonus we are glad to announce the return of the BeOS port and the deeply missed Playstation 2 port.

Changes 0.11.1 (2008-02-29):

Ports:
– Revived the PS2 port.
– Revived the BeOS port.

SCUMM:
– Improvements for Digital iMUSE subsystem. This fixes several glitches in The Curse of Monkey Island.
– Fixes for cursors in HE games.

AGI:
– Fix for zombies in King’s Quest 4.
– Fix for changing palettes in fanmade games using AGIPAL.

Lure:
– Fixed some conversation crashes in the German version.
– Fixed operation of the optional copy protection dialog in the German version.
– Added saving of conversation flags as to whether a particular conversation option had been previously selected or not.
– Fixed glitch that could cause transformation sparkle to happen a second time.
– Fixed behavior of Goewin when you rejoin her after meeting the dragon.

SAGA:
– Fix for rat maze bug in Inherit the Earth which made game not completable.
– Fixes for Inherit the Earth and I Have no Mouth game startup on a number of platforms.
– Reduced the number of simultaneous open files in I Have no Mouth, to allow it to run on platforms that can keep a limited amount of files open (e.g. on the PSP).
– Fixed graphics glitch in Inherit the Earth with simultaneous speech.
– Fixed palette glitch in Inherit the Earth when looking at the map while at the docks.
